Syron’s game-high 21 points falls short in Settlers’ bid for comeback win

Mercy defeated Southold 45-32 in the league opener yesterday at McGann-Mercy High School.

At first it looked like a blowout for the Monarchs, who took a 29-12 halftime lead into the locker room.

But the First Settlers came out a team reborn, stealing passes, passing deep into the offensive zone and taking the ball to the basket to chip away at the Mercy lead. Southold’s Grace Syron, who had a game-high 21 points, was all over the court, but in the end it wasn’t enough to contain Mercy’s Melina Santacroce, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Her sister Gianna Santacroce and Caryn Nabrizny added 9 points apiece.
