One of the five men charged in the gang-related shooting and machete attack in Southold on Oct. 14 has now been charged in connection with an Oct. 10 shooting on Maple Avenue in downtown Riverhead, Riverhead Police said this afternoon.
Police said an investigation determined that the weapon used to shoot Deyvi Perez, 19, in the Riverhead incident on Oct. 10 was the same weapon used in the brutal Southold attack four days later.
The fifth man charged in the Southold shooting, Albino Dejesus Medina, 20, of Bay Shore, was involved in the Riverhead shooting, police said in a press release this afternoon. He has been charged with first-degree assault and remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside, where he was already being held on $250,000 cash bail in connection with assault and weapons charges previously filed against him by Southold Police and is waiting grand jury indictment.
Medina was arrested in Bay Shore on Nov. 12 by Southold and Riverhead police officers and members of the U.S. Marshal’s N.Y.-N.J. Regional Fugitive Task Force, police said.
Southold Police and prosecutors have said all five shooting suspects are members of the MS-13 gang and the two men shot on South Harbor Lane in Southold at about 12:20 a.m. on Oct. 14 were members of the 18th Street gang.
Also charged in the Southold attack were Pedro Emilio Santamaria, 31, of Greenport, Jeremias Nathanael Recinos Torres, 19, of Aquebogue, Walter Vasquez, 17, of Greenport, and Freddie Fernando Torres Campos, 17, of Southold.
Riverhead Police said in an Oct. 11 press release that two men were sought in connection with the attack that left Perez with two gunshot wounds to the back. Police have not said whether a second suspect has been identified or apprehended.
“It’s still an ongoing investigation,” Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said this afternoon.
Perez was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center and later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for surgery, Riverhead Police said on Oct. 11.
