New landscaping company seeks green solutions, ‘transparent impact’ on environment

For Southold resident Jesus Cruz, a passion for the environment fueled his desire to open a landscaping business that would leave what he calls a “transparent impact”, with an eye toward protecting natural resources.

Cruz, who works with his colleague Allan Martinez, opened EcoOrganic Landscaping LLC this year, and serves the entire North Fork.

“We believe that our customers deserve expert advice as well as transparency in their landscape design and maintenance programs. Our business is built on trust and customized solutions, which are specifically tailored to fit within your budget,” he said.

His aim, Cruz said, is to provide a well-landscaped property that will increase a home’s value and appeal. In addition, plants and grass provide cleaner air and cooler temperatures in summer and a well-maintained lawn will improve drainage and reduce soil erosion, he said.

But, Cruz’s main focus is on a business that enhances property without the use of toxic products, focusing on solutions that are environmentally friendly.

“Attention to detail and use of safe products is what makes us different from the others,” he said.

EcoOrganic Landscaping offers a full range of landscaping services from initial design, installation and maintenance with state of the art equipment to help “build and maintain your beautiful landscapes while promoting earth friendly techniques, fertilizers and equipment. We are committed to providing the best customer experience and customer service. We are licensed, insured and bonded.”

With a can-do, friendly attitude, the pair assesses each new client, working to offer expertise and create designs that fit an individual’s taste and budget. In record time, they work quickly to transform properties and also recommend appropriate plants that will thrive in their environment, but also maintain a manageable size in accordance with the rest of the landscape.

Installation, Cruz said, is key. Before planting, soil is prepared by mixing in non-toxic products. “We want the transition for each new plant to be as stress free as possible, which will be beneficial for years to come,” Cruz said.

The company focuses on thinking green.

We take pride in promoting cleaner ways to keep the Long Island area landscapes beautiful while decreasing the damage to the ecosystems,” Cruz said. “We see it as Mother Nature has given us this land to make beautiful, so let’s give Mother Nature a gift in return; cleaner air, cleaner creeks, rivers, and lakes.”

He said while the business is important, what’s most important is preserving the environment for future generations. “I want to make a difference,” Cruz said.

Both men also work at Claudio’s in Greenport and take great pride in launching a new venture on the North Fork, the palace they love and call home.

Pollutants in area have led to the recent fish kill, Cruz said, and it’s his intent to work each day toward making a lasting difference.

“The landscape industry is a very large industry.  Every house, building and facility has some sort of space dedicated for landscaping. So the landscaping that takes places does cause air pollution from mowing and from the energy used from lighting landscapes, and water pollution from chemically spraying plants.”

EcoOrganico Landscaping LLC promotes alternative, organic fertilizers, organic seeds, organic insecticides and pesticides, with weed control done “the old-fashioned way, by hand”.

The soil used is an organic blend of compost, aged bark, peat, and topsoil perfect for starting or adding to planter boxes or pots, as well as flowerbeds, Cruz said. “We only use 100 percent quality grade products made in Ontario.”

EcoOrganico Landscaping also offers different types of compost mixture, mulch and bark chips, as well as aggregates, decorative stone, river rock, crushed stone, sand, gravel, decorative landscape boulders, and retaining stone walls.

Other services include trimming, pruning, autumn cleanup and winter plowing.

“We take care of all your year-round land maintenance,” Cruz said.
