Cops: Drunk Greenport man fell asleep with 3 kids running in road, assaulted officer

A Greenport man was busted on Thursday night after police said he was found sleeping on the street with his kids running in the road and then assaulted an officer.

According to Southold Town Police, Roody Harris, 32, was found on South Street sleeping on the side of the road in a yard; three young children that were with him were running in the street.

Police said when the officer woke Harris, he was highly intoxicated and became belligerent, cursing loudly and causing a disturbance. The officer attempted to arrest Harris for disorderly conduct, at which time Harris physically assaulted him, causing an injury to the officer’s arm.

Harris was charged with assault in the second degree, a felony, resisting arrest endangering the welfare of a child and disorderly conduct, police said. He was taken to Southold police headquarters for processing and held for arraignment, police said.

It was not immediately clear where the children were taken.
