Greenport’s Paul Drum to be dubbed ‘Police Chief for the Day’ at Maritime Festival

A beloved member of the Greenport community will once again have a special honor bestowed upon him during this year’s Maritime Festival.

Paul Drum will be honored with a badge and made honorary “Police Chief of the Day” at the Land & Sea gala, to be held at Greenport Yacht and Shipbuilding, on Friday, September 25; the event is the kickoff to the Maritime Festival. Last year, Drum was made honorary mayor for the day and given a key to Greenport by former Mayor David Nyce.

Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley will be onhand to dub Drum “Chief.”

In addition, this year, Drum is happy to host his 2nd annual “Paul Drum Pirate & Mermaid Breakfast,” to be held at Front Street Station, located at 212 Front Street, on Sunday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., with open seating throughout.

All proceeds will benefit Paul Drum’s Nautical Education Fund, created last year.

“We are all so proud of the strides and accomplishments Paul’s program has made in one short year,” his mother and Front Street Station owner Sharon Sailor said.

Through the Paul Drum Nautical Education Fund, seven weeks of programs were offered free to children from ages eight to 12 at the East End Seaport Museum this year, including excursions with Captain Dave Berson, lessons in water and boating safety from the Coast Guard, and learning about the untapped medicinal properties of the horseshoe crab. Snacks were also free.

Staff from the Floyd Memorial Library served as liaison to the children and helped to fill every class.

“Being chief for the day is one of the highlights of my life,” Drum said; he added that he would like to know if he’ll be getting a taser.

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell has confirmed that he will be attending the breakfast.

Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under and can be purchased by clicking here. Tickets are also available at Front Street Station.

Front Street Station absorbs the cost of the breakfast, and even those who cannot attend are urged to support the Paul Drum Nautical Education Fund.

The Paul Drum Nautical Education Program is aimed at raising funds to support children in the safety and enjoyment of the area’s surrounding waters.

The breakfast will also feature face painting and a fully decorated eatery, as well as pirates and mermaids a’plenty.
