Mattituck jumps out to 5-0 lead before sound of apparent gunshots clears field, suspends game Tuesday afternoon

Two bursts of what sounded like gunshots put an end to the soccer game Tuesday afternoon against Pierson/Bridgehampton after Mattituck put up five goals. With 3:49 left in the first half, the second round of gunshots echoed through the area and the field was then immediately cleared. Everyone was asked to go inside Mattituck High School for precautionary reasons.

The game would be called after thirty minutes.  It’s unclear whether the game will be finished at a later date.

Southold Police investigated the incident and cleared everyone to leave the building at 6:30 p.m. See separate story.
