Local kids will take center stage this weekend for the Little Miss and Mr. Mattituck competition, to be held during the annual Chamber of Commerce Street Fair on Saturday.

The contest is the highlight of the street festival, bringing about a dozen boys and a dozen girls on stage to compete by answering a series of questions about themselves, pageant-style.

“It’s very cute and fun to watch,” said TerryMcShane, chamber president. “It’s sweet, old-school community fun.”

The day also includes dozens of local vendors with booths set up on Love Lane and Pike Street, which will be closed the day of the fair.

“The fair itself begins at 9 a.m., and judging begins at noon — and I use the word ‘judging’ very loosely,” McShane laughed. “The kids get the questions in advance so they have time to think of a response, and they really come up with all sorts of things.”

All participants in the contest will receive a goodie-bag of gift certificates to local businesses.

“We try to gear it towards things the kids will like — gift certificates for ice cream, movie tickets, that sort of thing,” McShane said.

The festival will also include a raffle with 50 prizes donated from local businesses. The biggest prize of the day is $500 in cash, donated by the chamber.

The yearly Mattituck Chamber of Commerce street festival helps to raise funds for scholarships, Christmas trees each year in Mattituck and other projects.
