Zigmund ‘Ziggy’ J. Helinski, 90

Zigmund J. “Ziggy” Helinski of Southold died at his home on August 22, 2016. He was 90 years old.

Ziggy was born in East Marion on August 15, 1926 to Valentine and Constance (nee Zywialkowski) and was a graduate of Greenport High School.

He then served for two years in the Army Air Corp and two years in the Merchant Marines.

On July 20, 1952, he married the former Marie Donahue in Southold.

Ziggy enjoyed a career as a parts manager for Tryac Truck & Equipment and an employee of the Southold Town Highway Department.

The lifelong North Fork resident was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Men’s Club. He was also a member of the Southold Fire Department and its Eagle Hook & Ladder Co., American Merchant Marine Veterans – Peconic Bay Chapter and Catholic War Veterans. From the mid-1960s to the 1970s, Ziggy served as a Scoutmaster with Southold Troop 6 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving is his wife Marie; five sons, Edward J. Helinski of Anchorage, Alaska, James H. Helinski of Berryville, Virginia, Joseph T. Helinski, Thomas M. Helinski and William E. Helinski all of Southold; a sister Helen Koral and eight grandchildren Kristen Helinski, James D. Helinski, Marcella Helinski, Christopher Irion, Evelyn Helinski and William L. Helinski, Dennis Swain, Simone Shephard; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 26 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Firematic services will take place during the evening visitation at 7:30 p.m.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Southold.

Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Southold.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice or Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad would be appreciated.
