Polls open today for Mattituck-Laurel Library 2017 operating budget vote

Open book on the table in library

The polls opened at the Mattituck-Laurel Library this morning for residents to vote on the proposed $1.42 million 2017 operating budget.

The budget put before voters today calls for a 3.5 percent tax levy increase, which translates to an approximate annual increase of $13.20 for an average household.

The proposed increase would include:

  • hiring a new part-time computer coordinator to handle all of the library’s present and future technology needs
  • expanding Sunday hours beginning in the fall of 2016 so that the library will begin opening on the second Sunday in September instead of the first Sunday in October, and will stay open until 5 p.m. each Sunday
  • a modest increase to the materials and programming budgets
  • and an increase in health insurance, debt service and operation costs over last year’s budget.

“The Mattituck-Laurel Library, your community library, has been an integral part of our town life for the past 113 years,” the library wrote in its Fall newsletter. “The board of trustees would like to continue this tradition by providing our residents with the quality materials, programs and services they expect from their community library.”

The polls opened at the library 10 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.
