A foodie workshop for industry pros focuses on farm-raised seafood

If you buy, sell, prepare, serve or teach students how to do any of those, N.Y Sea Grant has a workshop for you.

The “Sea Food Eat Food” workshop is for people who work in many aspects of the food industry including food media, food service professionals, retailers, restaurateurs, chef educators, culinary students, chefs and other interested parties.

NY Sea Grant will hold this informational workshop at Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center on Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The workshop is divided into two sessions. The morning session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and consists of a field trip to a local shellfish farm.  The afternoon session, running from 1 to 7 p.m. includes the workshop and a reception. The cost of the full-day program is $15. The cost for those who wish to attend only the afternoon session is $10.

Key topics covered during the workshop will include how seafood is kept safe, its nutritional benefits, seafood sustainability, the availability of farmed and wild seafood in New York and the changing consumer base.

The workshop will be presented as a panel discussion with local industry producers followed by a reception showcasing local seafood to highlight the versatility and quality that it can provide. It will answer the question of how food professionals can take advantage of farmed raised seafood can complement wild caught seafood to meet the growing demand for healthy, delicious and safe seafood.
