Local dog, left in North Fork animal shelter for three years, is chosen for national adoption campaign

NFAWL created this image for a Facebook post, trying to help Elijah find a home.

Few things are more heartbreaking for those who work at an animal shelter than seeing a favorite resident passed up for adoption time and time again.

Seven-year-old Elijah, who lives at the North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Peconic facility, is one of those animals who has been waiting for way too long to find a home.  A male terrier mix, he was found wandering along a road almost four years ago and over the years he has endeared himself to staff and volunteers at the shelter. They are desperate to find him his permanent home.

Elijah is available for adoption at the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Elijah was featured in the shelter’s 2017 “Adoptables” calendar and now his search for a family has gone national. The Dogington Post, an informational website for all things dog, has teamed up with Wellness Natural Pet Food to introduce the “Twelve Dogs of Christmas” in an attempt to help these animals find homes.

Elijah is one of 12 dogs from around the country selected to be featured on Doginton Post’s website. He has his own web page complete with photos and a biography, which mentions that he would be the perfect dog for an “active, loving family.”

NFAWL manager Gabby Stroup agrees.

“He’s a super nice dog. Even though he’s older, he’s got a lot of energy. His energy level has gotten way better since our trainer Gina Lepine has been working with him. When he first came in he was almost impossible to walk on a leash, but you should see him now. He’s much better than he was and is definitely more adoptable than he was. He’s a great dog.”

If you’d like to meet Elijah, you can visit him at the NFAWL’s holiday open house on Sunday, December 10 from 11-2 p.m. The shelter is located at 165 Peconic Lane in Peconic.  631-765-1811.
