Blizzard will dump 12 to 16 in. of snow, with strong winds gusting to 50 mph

The blizzard bearing down on the Northeast this morning will bring heavy snow and strong winds to the region. A blizzard warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. A gale warning is also in effect.

The National Weather Service has increased its estimated snow accumulations from the An expected 12 to 16 inches of snow is expected to fall across Suffolk County.

Heavy snow with north winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 50 mph will combine to reduce visibilities to one-quarter miles or less. White-out conditions are likely with blowing and drifting snow.

Local power outages with downed trees and power lines possible. If you see any downed wire, assume it is a live electric wire and report it immediately.

Officials urge residents to avoid all non-essential travel. All local schools and town government offices are closed. Many businesses have announced closings. See list of closings and cancellations.
