The first annual North Fork Dock Diving Pet Expo and Fundraiser is coming to Greenport Harbor Brewing Company’s Peconic location later this month. The event will feature “high-flying splashing action” in the form of dogs diving off the deck of a 20 by 40 foot pool to be set up on the site.

The idea for bringing the weekend-long event to the North Fork came from Kimberly Loper, owner of Harbor Pet in Greenport.

“They held it in Westhampton last year and I thought it was a great idea for the North Fork,” said Loper. “So I approached Rich Vandenburgh from Greenport Harbor Brewery and he was on board with it. What a great way for pet parents to kick off the season here on the North Fork; meet and see new pet products and companies, and enjoy a beer from the brewery.”

There will be live music, food and brews available for purchase as well as merchandise for your favorite fur pal. Pet experts and local dog trainers will be on hand to speak with, and adoptable dogs from the North Fork Animal Welfare League will be available to meet. Diving competitions will run throughout each day.

“We are excited to bring the North Fork’s first dock diving event, pet expo and fundraiser to our brewery,” said Vandenburgh. “Our event will bring in businesses from all around the area, help support local and island-wide non-profit organizations and get to see dogs fly through the air and splash in the pool.”

The event will raise funds for the North Fork Animal Welfare League, the American Legion’s Burton Potter post and Canine Companions for Independence and Loper hopes that each year they can vary the beneficiaries.

Attendance is free and people who would like to have their dogs compete or try the sport can register in advance at www.dockdogs.com or on site the day of the event.  Fees to try out or compete start at $27 per team (dog and handler), for each competition.

The event will be held on Saturday, May 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, 42155 Main Road, Peconic.

This is a pet-friendly event, although dogs must be leashed and well-behaved.
