Lots of folks will be flocking to Hallockville this weekend for the eighth annual Fleece and Fiber Fair — the largest fiber event on Long Island.

The fair takes place rain or shine May 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Hallockville Museum Farm. Each day will feature lots of different demonstrations and exhibits.

Sheep, llamas, alpacas and angora rabbits will be among the animals on display at the fair. Some of them will be shorn of their coats during demonstrations of the first step of turning fleece into yarn and fibers.

Well-trained Border Collies will show off their herding skills as their handlers signal them with whistles and hand movements to drive a flock of sheep across the pasture.

Other steps in the process of making yarn include carding, spinning and dyeing it will be on exhibit, too. Weavers, knitters, wool felters, quilters and rug-hookers will show how the yarns are turned into various finished products.

Nearly two dozen vendors will be offering handmade artisan products in the Naugles Barn.

Food vendors will sell a variety of freshly-prepared lunch items for guests to enjoy while relaxing in the picnic area shaded by apple trees.

Admission fees for each day are $6 adults, $4 for children ages 5 to 12, ages 4 and under are free. There is a family rate of $15 for two adults and two children or one adult and three children.

All admission fees directly support the not-for-profit educational mission of Hallockville Museum Farm.

Please note for the safety of the farm animals and guests, dogs and other pets will have to stay at home.
