Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after accidents and homicide. To help combat that statistic, the Town of Southold’s Youth Bureau has held two highly successful SafeTALK training programs in the past few months. By community request, another one has been scheduled for June 6 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Peconic Landing’s Community Center.

SafeTALK is a program designed for anyone in the community over the age of 15 to learn to recognize people with suicidal tendencies. SafeTALK seminars give attendees tools to help those considering suicide to connect to life-saving assistance before taking their own lives. Attendees learn how to talk, ask, listen and keep safe persons they are worried about.

The SafeTALK seminar is free and open to everyone including parents, teachers, clergy, police and emergency medical workers — virtually anyone in the community who is concerned about the growing trend of suicide and would like to know how to help.

Registration is limited to 30 people. Please call the Youth Bureau at 631-765-8251 for more information or to register.
