Customers line up for first bite of Goldberg’s Famous Bagel in Mattituck

After months of anticipation, the aroma of fresh bagels wafted throughout the Mattituck Shopping Plaza on Thursday, as Goldberg’s Famous Bagel opened its doors for the first time.

According to owner Mark Goldberg, the new store, located in the space where the former North Fork Bagel Company was sited in the Waldbaum’s shopping plaza on Route 25, is the second location planned for the North Fork; another Goldberg’s famous is set to open in Riverhead at the old Woolworth building on East Main Street in the coming weeks.

Goldberg’s Famous Bagel also has locations in Southampton and East Hampton, and has long been a favorite on the South Fork, not only for its bagels but for flagels, sandwiches, soups, chili, deli selections and catering.

On Wednesday, business was brisk at the new locations, with eager customers lining up for their first bite of the East End’s “famous” bagels.

Manager Chris Conlan said he was “excited to meet all the locals and learn their names.”

New Suffolk resident Mary Steinfeld said she was thrilled the shop had opened. “We haven’t had a bagel store here for years,” she said. “There’s not a lot of choice for breakfast on the North Fork. You need a bagel store.”

Ava Cardinale said she was eager to try a “flagel.”

Added Daniel Williams of Mattituck, “We needed a place to get bagels in the area.”

Goldberg’s Famous Bagel will be open daily from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m, except for Sundays, when the shop will be open until 3 p.m. For. further information, call 631-315-5236.
