Update: Police, hospital confirm death of Kaitlyn Doorhy following accident in Bridgeport Friday afternoon

Update: 3:03 p.m.: Bridgeport Police and hospital officials have confirmed Kaitlyn Doorhy’s tragic death after being struck by a car on Friday.

Bridgeport police forwarded a release from Saint Vincent’s Medical Center Saturday: “This morning the parents of Kaitlyn Doorhy gave permission for St. Vincent’s Medical Center to confirm that their daughter had died from injuries she sustained on Friday afternoon. Her parents have agreed that her organs would be donated for transplant. Mr. Doorhy said, “Kaitlyn is an organ donor and will help save the lives of others”, the release read.

“Our hearts grieve with the Doorhy family. There are thousands of individuals waiting for lifesaving organs or tissue”, said Brooke Karlsen, vice president, surgical services at the hospital. “We hope it provides comfort to Kaitlyn’s family and the Sacred HeartUniversity community to know that Kaitlyn’s generous gift of life will save lives.”

St. Vincent’s Medical Center will fly the Donate Life flag in Kaitlyn’s honor.

Funeral arrangements for Doorhy were announced Saturday.

Bill Kaempffer, public information officer for the Bridgeport Police, added that the accident investigation remains ongoing. “Our hearts go out to her family,” he said.

Original story: There are conflicting reports by police about whether or not Kaitlyn Doorhy of Mattituck, who was struck by a car in Bridgeport yesterday afternoon, is still alive.

Bridgeport police said this morning Doorhy had died of injuries she sustained when she was hit by a car while crossing a street with a friend. A few hours later, police spokesperson Bill Kaempffer, public information officer for the Bridgeport police said that “as of this morning, she was still in critical condition”.

A close friend of Doohry’s mother told SoutholdLOCAL last night that Darla Doorhy informed her that her daughter had passed away.

Doorhy’s college, Sacred Heart University issued a statement today that they were informed by Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, that the college junior, had not succumbed to her injuries.

Other media outlets continue to report conflicting information.

Doorhy’s family has not returned requests for comment.

Sacred Heart released a statement Friday, which police distributed with a news release, according to ” href=”http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/College-Student-Struck-in-Bridgeport-272327951.html” target=”_blank”>nbcconnecticut.com: “A Sacred Heart University student, who is a junior, was involved in a motor vehicle-pedestrian accident in the City of Bridgeport this afternoon… The thoughts and prayers of the entire Sacred Heart University community are with the student and her family.”

The Courant, reported Doorhy was critically injured when she was struck about 12:30 p.m. by a motorist traveling north on Madison Avenue. “Doorhy was crossing the street with another female who was not injured. Police said the driver, Brandon M. Pouncie, 28, of Bridgeport, stayed on the scene and no charges have been filed as of Friday night.”
