Cops: Man with loaded gun stole bag of Snickers

Two men with a loaded gun in the car stole a bag of Snickers from a Mattituck home, police said.

According to Southold town police, a call came in at 10 a.m. from a home on Pacific Street, where a woman said she’d seen a man, who had knocked on her door a few minutes before, peering into the windows of her neighbor’s house and trying to open the door.

Police said they stopped Willie James Blackmon, 88, and Kenny Belcher, 46, both of Riverhead, leaving the area — and found a loaded revolver in Blackmon’s car.

After canvassing the Pacific Street area, police said they found that Belcher had entered one residence and was confronted by a woman who lived there. Belcher, police said, asked the woman for money and when she told him she couldn’t help him, he left, stealing a bag of Snickers on the way out.

Police arrested Belcher and charged him with burglary in the first degree, a felony, criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and one count of criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor.

Blackmon was charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon, a felony. Both were held pending arraignment in Southold Justice Court.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
