James R. Cox, 64

James R. Cox, Sr., a lifelong resident of Mattituck, died on May 8, 2014 at the age of 64.

He was born in Greenport on December 17, 1949 to Benjamin H. and Rita E. (nee Dixon) Cox.

A graduate of Mattituck High School, Jim had been a crew foreman for the Mattituck Park District.

Jim was also been a 41-year member of the Mattituck Fire Department and Rescue Squad where he served as a Lieutenant, Captain of Engine Co #1 and served as a Chief from 1994-1999.

He is survived by his wife Sharon L. Cox (nee Ericson), whom he married on September 6, 1975 in Southold; five children: Carolyn J. Skoufatos of Chesapeake, Virginia, Deborah Cox of Southold, Eileen Cox of Laurel, James R. Cox, Jr., of Mattituck and Benjamin Oliver of Southold; his sister, Joan Platt of Hampton Bays; ten grandchildren: Peter Skoufatos, Jr., Michael Scoufatos, Courtney Kruk, Colin Kruk, Rylie Kruk, Kaitlyn Cox, Alexis Olson, McKenzie Olsen, Grace Oliver and Bryan Cox; his last surviving aunt: Margaret (Midge) Marcel; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and his beloved dog Sandy. He was predeceased by his sister Diane Oliver.

The family recieved visitors Monday, May 12 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Firematic services were held that evening. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celeberated Tuesday, May 13 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt was be the celebrant. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
