Mourners pay respect as Southold hero is laid to rest

An expansive flag hung over Main Bayview Road in Southold Monday as mourners filed into St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery to bid farewell to a hero.

Christopher Wyatt Drum, 42, who died on July 2, was laid to rest on Monday after a funeral mass at St. Patrick’s R.C Church in Southold, with interment following at the cemetery.

Southold Fire Department services were held on Sunday .

“Chris was a friend, and will indeed be missed. He took pride in taking care of others, to the best of his abilities, which were numerous. Southold Fire Department has lost an integral part of our team, and Southold Town has been diminished by his loss. Whatever you do, always try to pay it forward, as Chris did,” said Southold Fire Department’s Chaplain Joe McCarthy.

“Thoughts and prayers with the family of EMT/FF Chris Drum of the Southold Fire Department,” said Mattituck Fire Chief Vincent Tirelli on Facebook this week. “RIP, Brother.”

Chris Drum was one of the heroes who stepped up to save a man recently in Southold.

“I’m sad not to have the chance to have met and thanked him,” said Joseph OByrne, the man saved by Drum and other rescuers.

Drum is survived by his beloved wife Katherine Meehan Drum and parents Marie and Lee Beninati of Southold. He is also survived by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends in the Beninati, Drum, Cipolla, and Meehan families.
