‘Bare’ exhibition presents Spectral Nudes by two artists at the Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery

Bare, an exhibition highlighting evocative images by Michael Edelson and Ann Brandeis will open at the Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery with a special reception on Saturday, September 6 from 6-8pm with Waters Crest wines and light bites. Bare runs from September 6 through October 12 and a portion of the sales proceeds will be donated to The Retreat Domestic Violence Services whose mission is to provide safety, shelter and support for victims of domestic abuse and to break the cycle of family violence. The Retreat, in pursuit of their mission, annually provides assistance for thousands of families on the East End.

Alex Ferrone states, “Both artists are exhibiting images that directly relate to responses of domestic abuse while revealing vulnerability and unprotected emotions, layered sentiments, exposed reactions of retreating into oneself, and the renewal of inner strength.”

“The Bedroom Has Its Secrets” series by noted photographer, Michael Edelson is inspired by Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem, “What Lips My Lips Have Kissed” and photographed entirely in the former Greenport Victorian Lady historic bed and breakfast. Edelson’s evocative images of male and female nudes provoke thoughts of vanished loves and lost companions. “I always sense a wave of sadness when in structures this old,” he says. “What people laughed and cried in these rooms? What joy and grief came to them? One can almost believe in ghosts when surrounded by the presence of these vanished inhabitants.”

Michael Edelson’s accomplished photographic career includes the position of the initial Associate Director of New York’s International Center of Photography; Board Member of the Hamptons International Film Festival that he helped create; Special Projects Editor at Magnum Photos’ New York office; and Professor Emeritus of Stony Brook University where he directed the Photography Program. Edelson co-authored The Concerned Photographer 2 with Cornell Capa published by Grossman in 1972, from which resulted a major traveling exhibition he curated that featured the works of W. Eugene Smith, Bruce Davidson, Gordon Parks, Ernst Haas, and Marc Riboud among others.

Additional accolades include some of the museums in which Michael Edelson’s work is collected such as The International Museum of Photography and Film at the George Eastman House, The International Center of Photography (New York), the Bibliothèque National (Paris), and Beth Hatefusoth (Museum of the Diaspora) Tel Aviv. Among many of the magazines in which his work has appeared include Newsweek, Travel & Leisure, United Airlines Mainliner, Revue Fotografie (The Czech Republic), Zoom-Le Magazin de L’Image, Fotografia Italiana, and Continental Airlines Flightime.

Ann Brandeis has travelled extensively, seeking images to incorporate into her photographic dialogues, and she focuses on the many paths people take throughout their lives. Brandeis looks for “signs and elements that visually describe or capture our memories — personal moments in time, that remind us of our past, sustain us through our present and guide our future. Often conflicting, these memories may have little to do with rational thought and are resistant to logic, reminding us of our innocence, our passions, desires, and losses, which, when embraced, become our history. I believe these personal and universal memories mark the passage of time, and remind us that time is both, our enemy and our friend.”

With an MFA from Pratt Institute and teaching positions at Rochester Institute of Technology, Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC, and Manhattan Marymount College, Ann Brandeis’ numerous accomplishments and awards include multiple IPA (International Photography Awards), Luci Awards, and Prix de la Photographie Awards, Paris (Px3); as well as Worldwide Photography Gala Awards (WPGA), Society for Education Juror’s Award, and Guild Hall’s Best Narrative Image Award 2012. Listed in Graphis Publications’, The Best Photographers 2013 and published as the author of Color Processing and Printing by Prentice Hall, her work has also been included in numerous national and international exhibitions.

View Bare from September 6 through October 12, 2014 and join Michael Edelson and Ann Brandeis for a Gallery Talk on Sunday, October 5, at 1 p.m. to hear the artists discuss their work. The Bare Exhibit and Gallery Talk are sponsored by Abatelli Realty & Appraisal Services.
