Police: Mattituck High School student, 16, struck by car while skateboarding on lunch break

A Mattituck HIgh School junior who was skateboarding on his lunch break was struck by a car on Friday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, Megan Kruszeski, 34, of Greenport, was heading southbound on Wickham Avenue and struck the boy, 16, from Peconic, who was crossing the street on a skateboard. The student entered the crosswalk against the direction of the crossing guard and failed to yield to the southbound vehicle, police said. No charges were filed.

The student was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. Police Chief Martin Flatley said he believed the boy might have sustained a fractured leg, but no details were immediately available.

Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Anne Smith said Friday that the student had left campus for lunch before noon. Students in the district who are juniors are allowed to leave campus, with parental permission; seniors are allowed to drive off for lunch, also with parental okay.

The student, she said, was hit at the intersection of Pike and Wickham; the decision was made to airlift the student to Stony Brook Hospital, she said.
