Updated: Laurel man, 31, airlifted after Jeep rolled over and he sustained ‘traumatic’ injuries in Route 48 accident in Peconic early Sunday

Update: 12:33 p.m. Police have identified the driver injured in an accident early Sunday on Route 48 in Peconic as a Laurel man.

According to Southold Town Police,  Adam Bishop, 33, of Laurel, was driving a 1993 Jeep west on Route 48 , west of Cabots Woods Lane in in Peconic at 12:25  a.m. when the he left the roadway for “unknown reasons” entered the median, and rolled over several times.

Bishop was treated for multiple traumatic injuries at the scene by Southold Fire Department rescue and flown to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police helicopter, police said; the jeep was impounded for safety checks.

Update: 8:14 a.m.: Injuries sustained by the driver of the vehicle in the accident were “serious”, according to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley.

Original story: At least one person was hurt in an accident on Route 48 in Peconic early Sunday morning, according to police.

A Medevac was called to the scene, landing at the Peconic School after the accident, which took place at approximately 1 a.m. across from the BP gas station. The victim, who had “substantial” injuries, was flown to Stony Brook Hospital, according to sources at the scene.

Traffic was diverted from Route 48 as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
