Beyond the flurry of sales at area retail stores and a day off from work for many, Veterans Day has deep meaning for the brave troops who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America — and for their families.
A number of events marking Veterans Day will take place across the North Fork on Tuesday.
At the American Legion Post 803 in Southold, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with speeches from various veterans and elected officials. The Ladies Auxiliary will be presenting a $3,500 check to a double amputee veteran of Iraq. Immediately following, a presentation by Vice Commander Charles Sanders, who served two tours in Afghanistan, will be given, discussing the impact of 9/11 on so many who have served, and on the importance of keeping the American Legion’s mission alive. Hot dogs will be served following the event.
The Cutchogue Presbyterian Church has unveiled the fruits of their “Buy A Flag, Honor A Vet” project. For $5, they have been personalizing American flags with a veteran’s name, branch of service, rank, era and other pertinent info. Flags were planted on the church lawn to create a “beautiful Field of Flags in time for Veterans’ Day,” the church’s website said. The field was dedicated at the church’s Sunday service and can be viewed on Veterans Day. All proceeds from the sale of flags go to Wounded Warrior Project.
In Greenport, the new skating rink at the Burton Potter Post #185 will be dedicated at 11 a.m.
In addition, just in time for Veterans Day, Skipper’s in Greenport is hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Greenport American Legion.
