Photos: Crowds turns up the heat with spicy chili contest to benefit church’s 300th anniversary

It might have been cold outside, but, baby, it was hot and spicy inside Mattituck Presbyterian Church Friday night as cooks battled it out during a chili/cornbread cook-off to benefit the parish’s 300th anniversary next year.

Scores turned out to sample 26 varieties of steaming hot chili and 17 types of corn bread baked by parishioners. A panel of judges tasted all the entries and declared Cindy Bitonti the first prize chili winner, with Prudence Heston coming in second. First prize for cornbread went to Robin Doroski and Debbie Boschetti came in second place.

“We raised a little over $1400,” said organizer Tammy Cavanaugh, with over 100 turning out. “It was a great crowd. We appreciated that both church and community members were there. It was a great response, with a w wonderful turnout. And it was wonderful to see things building towards the 300th celebration. More events to come.”
