With Mother Nature sending leaves fluttering off the trees over the past weeks, Southold Town is set to commence its Fall Leaf Clean-Up on Monday.
According to the Southold Town website:
• The highway department will begin collecting bagged leaves only, in biodegradable leaf bags, beginning on Monday. There will be no fall collection of brush/branches; the highway crew will beginning in Laurel and ending at Orient Point. As of Monday, all residents should have their leaf bags ready at curbside.
• Leaves are accepted at the compost site free of charge year-round, as long as they are delivered loose or in leaf bags, which are available at most local hardware and grocery stores.
• Only brush and branches brought in residential vehicles will be accepted free of charge from Saturday, November 1, through Sunday, November 30.
• Brush brought in commercial vehicles — for example, those with commercial disposal permits or those with a capacity greater than one-ton— will be charged $30/ton, or half the regular rate.
• Brush does not include stumps of any kind.
• All yard waste must be free from any plastic, garbage or other debris as it will not be picked up or accepted at the compost site.
• Those leaving brush at curbside will be subject to town Code violations and fines.
Home composting note: According to the town, decaying leaves are a natural way to feed soil with organic matter and can reduce the need for chemical fertilizer in the spring. Please consider “leaving the leaves” on your lawn or garden, if appropriate.
