Cops: Unlicensed Riverhead man busted for DWI; passenger had pot, gave fake name

Two Riverhead men were arrested on Route 25 in Southold Tuesday night, police said.
According to Southold Town police, an anonymous driver called police to say they’d spotted a vehicle driving erratically at 10:20 p.m. Jose Avelar, 48, was stopped and found to be intoxicated; he was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
Meanwhile, police said, his passenger, Elmer Quesada, 19 and also of Riverhead, was found to be in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and false personation, a misdemeanor, for giving the wrong name to law enforcement officials, police said. Both men were transported to Southold Town police headquarters and held to await arraignment.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
