Pedestrian struck and killed by westbound train in Riverhead

A Ronkonkoma-bound passenger train that originated in Greenport late last night struck and killed a pedestrian west of the Riverhead station.

The train left Greenport at 9:39 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Ronkonkoma at 11:02 p.m.

“The train struck an unidentified trespasser west of the Riverhead station near Mill Road at approximately 10:20 p.m.,” MTA spokesman Salvatore Arena said this morning.

It carried six passengers at the time of the accident, Arena said. They were transported to Ronkonkoma by a bus provided by the MTA, he said.

MTA police responded to the scene and are investigating the accident. The agency spokesman said he had no further information about the victim.

The Suffolk County medical examiner’s office responded to remove the victim’s body from the tracks. Riverhead Town Police also responded to assist at the scene.

The tracks were cleared and reopened for normal service this morning, Arena said.
