Cops: Unlicensed quad driver almost causes accident on Rt. 48, flees from police

A Cutchogue man was cuffed Friday morning after he almost caused an accident with his quad on a snowy Route 48 and then tried to flee from authorities on foot, police said.

According to Southold Town police, Erick Secaida, 23, was arrested on Friday at 11:28 a.m. on Bridge Lane in Cutchogue after he drove an unregistered quad, attempting to cross Route 48 from north to south in front of a tractor trailer truck, leading the driver to “slam on his brakes,” and almost causing an accident.

Secaida then refused to stop and drove into a farm field with an officer in close pursuit, police said; next, he got off the bike in a wooded area off of Bridge Lane and headed off on foot. After tracking Secaida in the snow, he was found and arrested, police said.

Secaida was charged with reckless endangerment and unlicensed operation in the third degree, a misdemeanor, as well as being unregistered and uninsured, police said.

He was taken to Southold police headquarters and released on bail, police said.
