Our new congressman sworn in, casts first votes in House last week

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin was sworn in as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives by House Speaker John Boehner on Jan. 6.

Zeldin (R-Shirley) ousted six-term incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) by a 10-point margin in New York’s First Congressional District, winning 55 percent of the vote.

At age 34, Zeldin is one of the youngest members of the House. He was one of 52 new members of the House sworn in last week.

The 114th Congress has the largest Republican majority of an any Congress since the 71st Congress of 1929-1931.

“Elections have consequences and this past November’s election dramatically shifted the landscape in Washington,” Zeldin said in an email message from his campaign organization Jan. 6. “This is an opportunity with this new Congress to unite and notch one victory after another for America.”

Zeldin said he wants “to see America heading in the right direction again”
and was looking forward to upcoming votes “to pass the Keystone XL Pipeline legislation, the Hire More Heroes Act, change the 30-hour work week under Obamacare to 40, and more.”

In his first week, Zeldin voted yes on the “Save American Workers” bill, to change the definition of “full-time employee” under “Obamacare” from an employee who is employed on average at least 30 hours per week to an employee who is employed on average at least 40 hours per week.

He also voted yes on a bill authorizing the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, an oil pipeline proposed by the TransCanada Corp. to expand the capacity of an existing pipeline running from Alberta, Canada to Nebraska.

Both bills passed the House with large majorities, with votes divided along partisan lines.

Zeldin serves on three committees in the House: transportation and infrastructure; foreign affairs; and veterans’ affairs. He also serves as co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, which has over 100 members.

The congressman’s district office is located at 31 Oak Street in Patchogue. His office in Washington, D.C. office is located at 1517 Longworth House Office Building. (Phone: 202-225-3826 Fax: 202-225-3143.) Zeldin can also be contacted via his official website.
