Bomb threat at McGann-Mercy Wednesday evacuates buildings; false report, police say after search

Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead was evacuated following a bomb threat this afternoon that turned out to be a false alarm.

Riverhead and state police searched the campus with a bomb-sniffing dog. The search turned up nothing, Riverhead Police Lt. David Lessard said.  Police cleared the school for re-occupancy about two hours after an unknown person called the school at 1:10 p.m. to say there was a bomb in the building. School officials immediately evacuated the building and called  the police, Riverhead Police Lt. David Lessard said.

Students, faculty and staff were released for the day since the incident took place near the end of the regular school day, police said.

Police sealed off  the school campus. Riverhead Fire Department was also called to the scene as a result of someone in the school pulling a fire alarm in response to the phoned-in threat, police said.
