Supporters came together Saturday night to celebrate the rich and storied history of Southold Town.

A cocktail party was held at Brecknock Hall to kick off the town’s 375th anniversary festivities, with dignitaries and locals alike turning out to share memories of Southold.

Bob Ghosio, town board liaison to the 375th anniversary committee, said he was “very proud to see so many solid committed members of our community show up to celebrate”. The councilman thanked “the committee for their dedication to organizing the next year’s special events. We are looking forward to everyone getting involved in recognizing our home town’s wonderful history.”

Guests included New York State Senator Ken LaValle, Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo, Suffolk County Legislator Al 2015_0118_gptKrupski, Congressman Lee Zeldin, members of the Greenport village board, and town board members Jill Doherty and James Dinizio, as well as Ghosio.

“I’m so proud that so many are dedicated to keeping Southold’s history alive,” Krupski said.

Zeldin added that the event was his first since taking his new post and said he was thrilled to be a part of such an important celebration.

LaValle joked that since he represented both the North and South Forks, there was some good-natured rivalry between Southold and Southampton as to the history of both. Palumbo, who lives on the North Fork, said he was proud to represent Southold during such an important event.

Herb Adler, president of the Southold Historical Society and chairman of the 375th committee thanked everyone for their help and reviewed the proposed schedule of events for the year. He invited anyone who wanted to include the celebration as part of their event or have their event added to the list, to please contact  Town Hall.

The event was sponsored by Peconic Landing. Supporters included Pindar Winery, Pellegrini Vineyards, North Fork Water, the Blue Duck Bakery and the Brecknock Hall Foundation. Joan Bischoff of the North Fork Promotional Council was also in attendance.

“I’m really excited that the launch of the town’s 375th anniversary celebration was such a success,” Ghosio said. “Clearly, people are interested in our town’s rich history and I believe because we continue to work to preserve that history by doing what we can to preserve our agricultural and maritime roots, people have a strong connection to our predecessors. That was really apparent in the 150-plus attendees at the event last night.”

Guests were able to purchase new 375th anniversary mugs, designed as a fundraiser for the year-long celebration.
