Community gives back in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King

After weeks of planning, the Southold Youth Bureau is sponsoring a “Dr. King Day of Service” to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King today.

“This special day will feature a menu of volunteer opportunities for Southold residents to make a difference in their community,” according to a release on the town’s website.

Those interested in volunteering to make the holiday “a day on” and not a “day off” have coordinated a host of special activities, including the chance to clean up the pantry or paint a room at Community Action of Southold Town, donate food at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church, give pet food at North Fork Animal Welfare League, help move the pantry at the North Fork United Methodist Church, paint garage and posts and the Cutchogue Cemetery, help serve a dinner at the Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, donate clothes for homeless veterans and bring them to the town rec center on Peconic Lane until noon, help out at San Simeon by the Sound, and make burlap planting disks for eelgrass restoration at Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Students at area schools, including the Mattituck-Cutchogue school district, will be participating in the projects.
