Candidates step up for Greenport village election, hand in nominating petitions

It’s official: Candidates throwing their proverbial hats into the ring for next month’s Greenport village election have handed in their nominating petitions.

Running for mayor are current Deputy Mayor George Hubbard, Jr., who will face off against Zuleyha Lillis. Incumbent Mayor David Nyce is finishing his second term as mayor; he won the election against former Village Trustee Jamie Mills in 2007, after former Village Mayor David Kapell announced that he would not seek another term. He ran unopposed for his seat in the next go-round.

Vying for two open trustee seats are incumbent Trustee David Murray, Greenport coach Jack Martilotta, businessman Douglas Roberts, and Greenport resident William Swiskey, who recently announced his run. Swiskey, a former trustee, ran again in 2013 but was defeated by Mary Bess Phillips and Julia Robins.

Election Day will be held on March 18, 2015, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with voting at the Third Street Firehouse. Voter registration days will be held on March 5 from 8:30 am. until 5 p.m. and March 7 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
