Located in a rainforest, Tikal, in Guatemala, encompasses the archeological remains of an ancient city, with roots deeply rooted in long-ago Mayan civilization.
And now, in Greenport, a new eatery has opened its doors that pays tribute to the essence of Tikal. Owner Carlos Gonzalez, who was born in Guatemala, said the restaurant, which opened on January 23, is the fruition of a long-held vision.
“Our whole family works together,” he said. “This is a family dream.”
Gonzalez had poured his heart into the restaurant, even painting a mural of the famous Tikal himself, where many gods are worshipped. The hope is that those who’ve visited Guatemala will come into the restaurant and recognize a familiar piece of home.
Together with his wife Emma and daughter Helen, Tikal.l offers a menu rich in both traditional Guatemalan and “international” cuisine, with offerings including tostados, tacos, quesadillas, empanadas, and tortas, as well as special menu items including carne guisada, or a beef stew with rice and salad, pollo dorado, or fried chicken with rice and salad, and chicken enchiladas, served with mole or green salsa, rice, beans, fresh cheese and cream. Prices are affordable, he said, so that families can come in and savor a meal and conversation.
Having lived in Greenport for 10 years, Gonzalez now resides in Southold, but said he felt the Front Street location was a perfect fit for the new business.
“We looked to different areas to find the right spot,” he said.
While his family has been working on opening the restaurant for over five years, Gonzalez said his goal is to continue to work hard. Many, he said, reach their goal and rest on their proverbial laurels. “You have to keep working hard, even after you’ve achieved your dream,” he said.
A man of deep faith, Gonzalez said he puts his faith in God. “We believe in God and He does the rest,” he said.
Some people, he said, complain about everyday woes such as snow, something he considers a plus. “If it snows, those who have no jobs can plow snow and then, they can eat,” he said. “It’s a blessing.”
Snow also means a rich harvest, come summer, he said.
Looking around at his new restaurant, Gonzalez watches children playing and families gathered round tables, sharing meals. The family restaurant is meant to serve all ages, from young to old, he said.
“We are open for the whole community,” he said. “Everyone is welcome.”
Of seeing his dream realized, Gonzalez said simply, “I am blessed.”
