Young and old alike bundled up today to take part in a beloved Greenport tradition, the 170th annual George Washington’s Birthday parade.
Fire departments from Greenport, Southold, Orient, Mattituck, East Marion, Cutchogue, Riverhead and Jamesport were joined by their comrades from across the East End and the entire region for the parade, which featured a long line of firetrucks decked out in all their glory.
Before the parade, Eaglettes, tiny firefighters in the making, donned jumpsuits and had an official inspection, then rode in a wagon pulled by other kids.
A 170-year-old tradition can’t be put on the back burner just because of some snow in the forecast.
According to Greeport Village Deputy Mayor George Hubbard, also a member of the fire department, volunteers prepared 80 gallons of clam chowder, to serve along with over 1,000 hot dogs, cupcakes, beer and soda after the parade.
