Update: Man charged with raping girl, 13, held on $5OK cash bail, $100K bond, in country illegally

Update, 11:06 a.m.: A Greenport man in the country illegally and charged in raping a girl, 13, who lived in his home was held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

2015_0216_RapistMUGJaime Contra-Quiroa, 22, appeared before Justice William Price in Southold Justice Court today. With the help of an interpreter, he told Price that he was living with a girlfriend on Washington Avenue in Greenport and working as a carpenter; he is from Guatemala and is in the country illegally, he said.

Price said Quiroa was charged with two counts of rape in the second degree, a “D” felony. Price explained that rape in the second degree means that an individual over the age of 18 engages in sexual intercourse with someone less than 15 years old.

The two  separate incidents occurred on December 9 at 4 p.m. and on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. at the Washington Avenue home, Price said.

Price said the defendant had the right to stop proceedings and wait for an attorney; Quiroa said he would like to proceed.

There is a chance that Quiroa will be deported, Price said. Due to the “serious nature” of the charges, and because, as an illegal immigrant, Quiroa “does not have ties to the community”, Price set the bail as indicated.

Quiroa is expected to return to court on Friday.

Original story: A Greenport man was arrested after he allegedly had sexual intercourse with a girl in his household, 13, on two separate instances, including Christmas Eve, police said.

According to Southold Town police Jaime Contra-Quiroa, 22, was charged with two counts of rape in the second degree, a felony, after it was reported that he had sexual intercourse with her on December 9 and December 24.

He was arrested on Sunday on Washington Avenue in Greenport, processed and held overnight pending arraignment in Southold Justice Court, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
