Police: Man drove drunk, hits Good Samaritan who was helping woman on road

A Good Samaritan who stopped to help a woman that had slid off the road in Sunday’s snow and ice was struck by a drunk driver Sunday, police said.

According to Southold Town police, Christopher Young, 32, of Greenport, was arrested on Route 48 west of Horton’s Lane at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Police said a young woman, Kelsea Cassone, 18, of Southold had been involved in a rollover accident due to the snow and ice. Kevin Grattan, 58, of Southold, as well as Chet Ciaglo, had stopped to help her; Young slid off the road and struck him, police said.

Cassone was transported by Southold Rescue to Eastern Long Island Hospital, police said; Grattan was uninjured, police said.

Young was released on his own recognizance by Justice William Price, who recused himself from future proceedings because he performed Young’s wedding this year. Price was the only judge available on the holiday for an arraignment.
