What better way to relax and read a book than with a cozy dog snuggled at your side?
The North Fork Animal Welfare League in Peconic has kicked off a “Read and Relax” program for dogs. Participants can bring something to read and sit with a pup for 20 to 30 minutes at a time.
“Human contact is the most enriching part of a shelter dog’s day,” said Dawn Bennett, president of the NFAWL’s board of directors. “Some days it may be better for you and our dogs to spend some calm time together. So whether there’s snow, or cold and or sweltering heat outside you can still provide the human interaction our dogs need inside.”
The new program helps decrease the arousal and stress levels of shelter dogs, makes them accustomed to down time, a key element to success in their new home, helps dogs to enjoy the presence of humans without having to be the center of attention, and is also meant for “dog people” who may not be physically able to walk shelter dogs, she said.
Those interested should bring something to read and see Gabby or Eileen at the shelter for a simple list of guidelines.
