North Fork Community Theatre teams up with CAST to help needy; ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ opens tonight

The North Fork Community Theatre is set to open its spring show tonight — and help the needy at the same time.

The NFCT unveils “Over the River and Into the Woods” tonight, and will be collecting items to help the less fortunate with the help of Community Action of Southold Town.

“The NFCT is thrilled to partner with CAST for the opening night reception of ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’, our March play as part of CAST’s celebration of their 50th Anniversary year,” said NFCT president Mary Motto Kalich. “Both  NFCT and CAST have been an integral part of the community for over 50 years — each nurturing an important part of the lives of North Fork folks, so it is a natural fit for the groups to work together.”

The show centers on Nick, “a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey who has just received a great career offer on the West Coast. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. This is a beautiful comedy about family, opportunities and the realities of life,” according to the NFCT’s website

Show dates are March 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 27, 28 and 29. All shows are at 8 p.m. except for Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at 631-298-NFCT or www.nfct.com. For more information call the NFCT information line at 631-298-4500.

There will be a free pre-show reception tonight, sponsored by Community Action Southold Town, as part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration.

CAST will be collecting health and beauty aids/personal care items such as  toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, shaving cream, combs, brushes, moisturizer, bandaids, Tylenol, and soap.

In addition to the opening night reception sponsored by CAST, there will be free Italian themed receptions on Friday, March 20 and Friday, March 27; all receptions are at 7 p.m.

Student Rush: Student tickets may be purchased for $12 at the box office beginning 10 minutes before each performance. These tickets are subject to availability and cannot be reserved ahead of time.
