As the North Fork sees yet another snowfall, Southold Town Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando said Friday that some secondary roads, “fragile” after being socked hard over the long winter, might not be able to withstand the plowing process.
Orlando said the highway department’s plan depends on how much snow falls Friday. If the area sees three to six inches, then they will proceed with sanding and salt, letting “Mother Nature” work her magic tomorrow, melting the snow as the temperatures get warmer.
If the area sees higher accumulations, “some secondary roads might not be plowed, due to the fragile state of the roadway,” Orlando said. The plows would “act like bulldozers” on already damaged roadways. We don’t want to make it worse,” he said.
Orlando said the plan would be to raise up plows, so that they won’t dig up the street.
He asked residents for patience. “I know it’s been a long winter for everyone. Hopefully, this will be the last storm,” he said. And, while Saturday may bring some “sloppy road conditions,” Mother Nature is expected to melt the snow by Sunday, he said.
Meanwhile, Orlando said highway crews are busy fixing potholes.
