Fishing report: Winter flounder season opens

The start to the inshore fishing season is officially here! On April 1, winter flounder opened up. The size limit is 12 inches and the bag limit is two fish per angler.

2015_brian_nigro_badgeI talked to Price over at White Water Outfitters in Hampton Bays. He felt that the best shot at getting some early season flatties was Quogue Canal or Shinnecock Canal. The Captain Bob fleet in Mattituck is looking forward to its annual flounder derby, the last weekend in April. Whoever catches the largest flounder gets a season pass!

Many of you may have heard that the scallop season was extended due to much of the bay being frozen over. I talked to Captain Rob Thompson, who was very excited about gearing his boat up and heading out for some scallops. Captain Rob also mentioned seeing an osprey carrying an unidentified bait fish, a great sign for the coming season.

The offshore report is quiet this week. The cod get the week off!
