Almost all of the the boats on the North Fork are in a holding pattern, awaiting the arrival of striped bass and opening of porgy season, on May 1. The Capt. Bob, fishing out of Mattituck, is running a flounder derby this weekend. The largest fish caught this weekend will earn the fisherman a season pass on the Capt. Bob.

2015_brian_nigro_badgeTo the south, the only news is from Captain Steve from the Fish On fleet. Steve reports that he is pulling his boat out of the water for the week to prep for some hard fishing this season.

Spring is slow to arrive this year (surface water temperatures are around 45-50 degrees, according to NOAA. We, as fisherman, may need to be creative to conjure up fishing opportunities for this last stretch, before fishing can really begin on May 1. Then the porgy season opens and, we hope, the water temperatures will rise a little so we can start to catch some striped bass.

Keep in mind regulations are constantly changing. Stay up to date with the latest NYSDEC saltwater regulations here.
