The cleanup scheduled for Saturday at the 5th Street beach in Greenport has been canceled, according to Trustee Doug Roberts.
“Mary and I are out of town at the funeral of a friend who passed very suddenly, and my colleagues on the board are all committed to the May Mile event,” Roberts said in a Facebook post today. “At any rate, I’ll keep cleaning the beach on my own day by day, and we’ll discuss the major improvements we’re making at the beach at the work session on May 21. But this Saturday I won’t be able to lead a beach cleanup. Believe me, I’d rather be picking up goose poo on a beach than to be out of town saying good-bye to a good friend. Thanks for your understanding.”
In recent weeks, Roberts has said he hopes to clean up debris and dog poop from the beach; some have said signs are clearly posted that no dogs are allowed on the beach and enforcement is important.
