Softball: Playoff-bound Monarchs shut out by Whalers, 9-0

Senior day at McGann-Mercy high school wasn’t exactly memorable.

After clinching a playoff berth on May 1 in a 3-1 victory over Port Jefferson, the Monarchs have lost three straight including Monday’s 9-0 defeat to Pierson/Bridgehampton.

Mercy (8-7 League VI) only mustered five hits in the game but hit the ball hard in all the wrong places.

“Just a little tough luck,” Monarchs head coach Rich Schaub said. “Every time we hit a ball hard it seemed to go right at somebody. Those things have a way of turning themselves around. We’re playing fine. We just had a little tough luck hitting the ball today.”

After clinching a spot early, sometimes teams let off the gas pedal a bit but Schaub doesn’t think that’s the case with his team.

“No not at all,” Schaub said. “We want to win every game because it would get us a higher seed but that didn’t happen. We’ll travel to Southold tomorrow for our ninth win and then we have the playoffs so we’re looking forward to it.”

With the loss, the Monarchs will most likely face-off against No. 1 Center Moriches in the first round of the playoffs. The Red Devils haven’t had much trouble in the league all season and currently sport an unblemished 15-0 record so the Monarchs will have their hands full. Mercy has lost both games to Center Moriches this season 12-0 and 14-2.

“We’re not really worried about who plays who,” Schaub said. “All we’re worried about is getting our ninth win and preparing for the playoffs.”

Mercy travels to Southold/Greenport (1-13 League VI) on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
