Cops: Good Samaritan saves kayakers in distress on Long Island Sound

A Good Samaritan came to the rescue of two teen kayakers stranded when they flipped over while on Long Island Sound off the coast of Greenport Sunday, police said.

According to Southold Town police, two boys, both 16, one of Melville and the other from Straudsberg, Pennsylvania, flipped out of their kayaks and were not able to get back aboard yesterday.

Police received a call at 4:49 p.m. for a marine rescue in the Long Island Sound. Good Samaritan Paul Hashagan, 55, of Freeport, saw what had happened, launched his own kayak, tied the two kayaks to his, and, while the teens were holding on, paddled safely to shore, police said.

Southold bay constables and police officers, as well as Southold and Greenport Fire Department Rescue responded to the scene, police said. The teens were transported by Greenport Fire Department Rescue to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of minor hypothermia, police said.
