After winning game one of the three-game Class B Suffolk County championship series against Babylon yesterday, the Tuckers wanted to put the series away today and they turned to Marcos Perivolaris to get the job done.

The senior did his part on the mound and the sticks behind him backed him up as the Tuckers rolled to an 11-6 victory in Babylon, ending the Panthers season.

Perivolaris tossed six innings and let up only two earned runs in the seven-strikeout performance. Errors behind him gave way to a few more runs but the Mattituck offense proved unstoppable as the game carried on.

Senior Chris Dwyer had a performance to remember at the dish as he hit 4-for-4 with a huge three-run home run in the fourth inning to go along with his two doubles.

“He pretty much had a career day,” Tuckers head coach Steve DeCaro said. “He hit the ball hard every time up at bat. He had their number all day.”

But he wasn’t the only one to do damage.

“Everyone pretty much did well,” DeCaro joked.

Ian Nish batted 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Victor Proferes was 2-for-4 with a RBI double and Joe Tardif, yesterday’s hero, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

No. 2 Babylon got as close as 9-6 as Mattituck made a few errors in the infield in a four-run inning before the Tuckers closed the game out with a two-run 7th inning.

“We knew we were going against their best pitcher in front of their fans even though we had a large contingent ourself but we basically wanted to put them away,” DeCaro said. “We know that Babylon’s a good team and we didn’t want to give them a chance to breathe.”

The Tuckers move on to the state tournament which will be single elimination. They’ll face the Class B Nassau County representative for the Long Island championship otherwise known as the southeast regional semifinal, which will be either Carle Place or Oyster Bay. They are currently tied 1-1 in a three game series. The winner will face Mattituck (23-1) next Friday at Dowling College.

Last year the Tuckers beat Wheatley in the Long Island championship before falling to Rye Neck in the Southeast regional. The farthest a Mattituck team has gone was in 1987 when they made it to the state semifinal.

Does this team have a chance to make history?

“We always say that you need two good pitchers to make it through states,” DeCaro said. “Well, we probably have like six. If we can keep it together, play good defense and hit the way we did today, we’re in good shape.”
