Some exciting reports coming in this week for the North Fork. The common thread in them all seems to be the blues are here, there is lots of bait, and bass fishing can be excellent at times.
Captain Ken from the Brooklyn Girl in Orient Point reports steady fluke fishing and up and down bass fishing. Robin fished the Brooklyn Girl on Father’s Day and landed this 48-pounder on a live eel. Fluking continue’s to be the more sure bet. Ross was out last Saturday landing 11 keepers.
Captain Mike Boccio reported some decent bass fishing on the Prime Time III and Jenglo boat, adding that the blues are showing up in Plum Gut. Mike also has observed tons of squid and butterfish in the area.
Over on the Orient Star, Captain Dan reports good fluke fishing with many people catching their limit of fluke to eight pounds. On the bass side of things, Dan agrees fishing is great at times with the boat catching its limit, while other times it can be a struggle to put together a catch. Bucktails and diamond jigs have been doing the trick with the bass, and the bluefish are in the local rips.
Captain Rob Thompson had a great charter on Wednesday with Keith Watkins of Southold. After fishing the gut and the ruins, they came back to Greenport to find Bass all over on top “sucking shrimp.” They started tossing “white gurgler” flies and had fish from 9:30 p.m. till 1:30 a.m.
The Capt Bob fleet has been busy fluking in Long Island Sound. Jon is reporting a lot of sand eels in the area. Fishing is “lock and load” on the high pieces around the various shoals in the area, while big fish are being caught in the deep.
The Peconic Star Fleet out of Greenport is reporting explosive porgy action, while fluking continues to be good, particularly around Gardiners Island. The Peconic Star II will be switching from fluke to half day bottom fishing starting July 7.
