Fishing was solid this week. Fish are starting to move around in a typical summer pattern in our local waters. If you know where to look, there are fish to be found.
Bill called me from Jamesport Bait and Tackle. He let me know that according to his intelligence, shark fishing has been good 10 to 18 miles off the beach. Bluefin are taking anything green in around 130 feet of water on the troll. Inshore, striped bass fishing is hot or cold in Plum Gut. Fluke are holding up nicely east of Gardiner’s Island. Bill notes that his customers are bait fishing. Bluefish have moved into the Jessup’s Neck area and are eager for diamond jigs. Fluke fishing seems to be quieting down in Peconic, with some bigger fish holding in the deep, mixed with weakfish (think: shark hole). Buoy 20 and Rodger’s Rock are good starting points for porgy action in the bay. In the sound, porgies are holding around Horton’s and Rocky Points. Fluking on the sound is very good with fish active at different depths, at different stages of the tide. Roanoke Shoal, out on the edge around buoy five, has been popular for fluke.
Dennis Tinnin from the Peconic Star fleet says porgy fishing on the Peconic Star Express continues to be great and the Peconic Star 2 is transitioning to half family fishing trips starting July 7.
The Brooklyn Girl’s Capt Ken reached out to let me know that they had a great trip Tuesday night bucktailing bass in some local rips with fish to 25 pounds.
Captain Dan Buckley reports that fluking has been very good on the Orient Star IV with many limits of fish to seven pounds. Dan is seeing more sea bass mixed in, which bodes well for the July 15 opening of the black sea bass season. Bass fishing has been inconsistent with some great trips with fish to 28 pounds and other trips where captain, crew and customers struggle to put together a catch. Bluefish have been consistent and seem to have set up shop for the summer.
Captain Phil Kess On the Fishy Business has had inconsistent bass action as well, but fluking has been very good. Phil is still fishing some spots in Peconic, in addition to areas around Gardiner’s and even into the Sound.
Rob Thompson fished the incoming tide with Mark Sullivan and his son William on Sunday night at Jessups. They had some bluefish action and a short bass.
Captain Jon of the Capt. Bob Fleet says fluking is holding up quite well in the Sound. Thursday’s trip saw 95 keepers with bait and bucktails doing equally well. Jon has been fishing around shoals and deeper edges, with tides dictating which edge and how deep he fishes.
