Police: Greenport, Shelter Island men injured in Shinnecock Bay boating accident

A Greenport boater was injured after hitting a sandbar in Shinnecock Bay, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Gregory Nissen, 34, and one of his passengers, Gregory Soros, 28, of Shelter Island, were injured after Nissen’s 40-foot pleasure craft, “Satisfactory,” was involved in the accident south of Buoy 12 in Shinnecock Bay yesterday at 6:30 p.m.

Nissen said there were injuries aboard due to the vessel’s abrupt stop after striking the sandbar, police said. Southampton town bay constables Danielle McManus and Nicholas DiBari responded aboard Marine 9, along with the United States  Coast Guard from Station Shinnecock, police said.

Three passengers aboard were evaluated at the scene for injuries; Nissen was transported to Southampton Hospital by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance for treatment of a possible head injury, police said. Soros was also taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment of a rib and possible head injury; he reportedly lost consciousness after impact, police said.

A third passenger, Courtney Sherwood, 29, of Manhattan reported was evaluated and required no further medical attention. The vessel was later removed by commercial assistance tow, taken to a marina, and secured, police said.
